ANF Architects was founded in 1975 by Lee Askew III.
Lee knew that recruiting and retaining the most talented and passionate team of design professionals would result in great design and client service. This belief, coupled with a company culture that promotes collaboration, creativity and innovation, has served as the foundation for the firm’s progressive thinking, design approach and growth. Since 1975, our firm has developed expertise in commercial, educational and civic projects each with a philosophy of sustainability woven into them.
Originally Lee Askew III Architects, our firm's name has changed with the times. Our logo history (left) shows the evolution of the firm's identity over the years.
Since our founding in 1975, our Midtown offices have become a forum for community activity and are used for a wide variety of civic, social, and business gatherings. We feel honored to have an opportunity to support the community that has supported us over the past 4 decades. In keeping with this tradition, we intend to celebrate 40 years in true ANF fashion.
Architecture and Art are natural companions. In 1988, our
firm began hosting art shows. Our office/gallery was the perfect place to
display the work of emerging Memphis artists who were relatively unknown and
unable to show their work in local galleries. In the mid 90’s we moved our
offices from the Monroe building across the courtyard into our current location
at 1500 Union Avenue. The newly renovated offices were designed to have a duel
function: architecture firm and art
gallery. With our residential scale, 12 foot ceilings with track lighting, and
polished oak floors, it was a natural fit.
To celebrate our 40th and our love of art, we will host a 40th Anniversary Art Show Retrospective "Where They Were and Where They Are Now" on Friday, April 10th, 2015. This exhibit will feature the work of 20 or so well-respected
local artists who have exhibited in our
gallery over the years. We will hang the original piece of art donated by the artists to our permanent collection at the time of their show (Where they were) alongside a sampling of the artist's current body of work (Where they are now).
To show our appreciation to the Memphis community for
supporting our firm over the past 40 years, all ANF art from our permanent collection in this exhibit will be
for sale with all proceeds to benefit local, art-related charities. Additionally, the artists will offer a portion of all sales from their current work to the same local, art-related charities.
The more than 30 year old tradition of the R&B Party, aka the "Architect's Party," a celebration with a cause, has evolved over the years. Over the past several years the "Taste of Caribe," a cigar smoking/rum tasting event, benefiting the International Children's Heart Foundation (a cause near and dear to us all) has replaced the R&B party. Keeping the tradition of giving back alive for our 40th Anniversary is a top priority for our firm. We are happy to announce that this summer our office will once again host this important fundraising event and Caribbean-themed celebration. Be sure to stay tuned for more details.
The ANF Architects 40th Anniversary Celebration will be held during Architecture Month on September 11th, 2015. This party gives us an opportunity to look back at the last 40 years to see what our impact has been on the community.
