Innovative Solar Tubes used at the Uclub Athletic Building

By Lee Askew  The University Club of Memphis recently engaged ANF Architects to renovate its Athletic Building and to improve the aesthetics of the lower areas, which until recently, have had little or no natural light.  To solve this problem ANF made two important changes:  raise the ceilings on the lower level and add Solar Tubes to bring natural light into the lower level.  Now nearing completion, the difference in the look and feel of the lower area, mostly the... The Office as a Place of Wonder

by Lee Askew Architects are all about space, especially the space they occupy.  Notable architects often have notable offices, places which excite the general public when they visit.  The offices of ANF Architects in Memphis are no exception and have become a center of community activity by being used for a wide variety of civic, social and business functions.  These events have not only helped our community in many ways, but have also had an impact on our firm.    ... High-tech style used for I-40 welcome center

By Thomas Bailey Jr. in the Memphis Commercial Appeal Monday, March 17, 2014 Asked to design a West Tennessee welcome center surrounded by thousands of solar panels, Askew Nixon Ferguson Architects looked to the future for inspiration. “One thought I had from the beginning is that the building should embrace the technology of the solar farm itself,” said project designer Louis Pounders. The West Tennessee Solar Farm sits along I-40 in Haywood County, less than 40 miles northeast of... Read More

ANF: A Green Office

By Mark Sehnert In 2013, this office recycled roughly ten tons of office paper, cardboard, glass, plastic and aluminum. I should know, having taken most of it to the recycling center myself. I have the weight slips and Bengay receipts to prove it. Once a year, we purge our Interiors library and donate out-of-date samples to IIDA’s Zero Landfill project for use by school children, teachers, college students and non-profits. Personally, and without prior written consent from my wife, I rescued... Read More

Lord of the Lunch & Learns

by Brian Martinelli For those of you who may not be familiar with the “Lunch & Learn” process, we have product representatives who come to the office during our lunch hour and feed us for free, in exchange for getting their product in front of us for our consideration in future projects.  Tasked with organizing ANF’s Lunch & Learn program seven years ago, I play liaison between the firm and the presenter to schedule and coordinate these lunches. As the program organizer, I... Read More

St. Louis Catholic School sees new Jr. High Addition

By Rebecca Conrad   Maybe it was divine inspiration, but I will concede that it all started with this sketch from Msgr. John McArthur emailed to me on a sheet of yellow legal paper.  Before this sketch, we had been planning for the new addition to be behind the existing school. It was that following March of 2012 that ground was broken for the construction of a new 2-story Junior High Wing on St. Louis’ East Memphis campus, the first phase of a multi-phased... Read More

Major Renovations at ANF Office

The summer of 2013 is turning out to be a good one for improvements here at ANF Architects. If you have attended a meeting, art show or other event here recently, you may have noticed how good the building looks now.  This is due to a 2 phase enhancement and renovation project that was initiated in May.  The first phase involved the exterior of 1500 Union.  It included a new (warm gray) paint scheme on the brick (see photo) along with the painting of all the wood trim, hand... University Club Athletic Building Renovation

Built in 1957, the University Club Athletic Building originally provided both members and guests with locker rooms, handball and squash courts and lounge facilities. Over the years, as athletic demands evolved, the building was renovated several times. Unfortunately, since the last major renovation in the 1990’s, the building has severely declined due to continued heavy use and numerous maintenance issues. In 2013, the Board of Directors and the membership voted to improve the building... Read More

This show featured an extraordinary collection of work that demonstrated the artist need to challenge himself, to take his art to the next level.  Bob paints from life and this show was no exception.  In the artists own words, this collection of work was inspired "from the mountains and streams of Western North Carolina to Tennessee rodeos, these watercolors and...
