The design of these living-learning residence halls fulfills fundamental cornerstones of the larger master plan for Memphis College of Art (MCA). Each design pairs light-infused studio space on the top floor with residential suites that each contain a washer/dryer, full kitchen, living room, security alarms, and private bedrooms. As desired by MCA, the design team provided distinctively modern buildings that reference the College's iconic Rust Hall and relate through scale, rhythm, and materials to the surrounding Midtown neighborhood. The striking multi-paned-glass-walled top stories combine glass of varying translucencies and transparencies to provide these students with natural daylight while limiting, but not eliminating, direct sunlight and views. Percentages of glass types differ on the four sides of the studio in response to the path of the sun.
