"RiverFit" - MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES RIVERFRONT FITNESS TRAIL + POP-UP PARK

THE MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES

The Memphis Grizzlies wanted to activate Tom Lee Park, an iconic park in downtown Memphis that was underutulized 10 months of the year, and in the process generate a community-wide discussion about the highest & best use of green spaces.

This 9 acre public, outdoor walking/running path with exercise stations spread along its length will promote a healthier lifestyle among users.

ANF Architects designed six stations for people of all fitness levels and added two sand volleyball courts and a soccer field for 6-on-6 play. The stations are: pull-up bars, monkey bars, battle ropes, abdominal benches, plyometric up-down-up boxes, and an obstacle course.

Two sand volleyball courts and a soccer field for 6-on-6 play were also included in the project design.

The fitness trail stretches along the Mississippi River side of Tom Lee Park.

These stations were designed to allow for removal and storage during Memphis in May. They were designed to be removable, but they actually stay up during Memphis in May now. The only things that are “taken down” are the soccer goals, and the sand volleyball courts get covered with plywood and mats.

This project was originally planned as a temporary installation, but has now become a permanent part of the park due to its popularity.
